In South Carolina we actually have four different types of domestic violence charges. Some are classified as misdemeanors and some are felonies.
1st Offense CDV is a Misdemeanor punishable by up to 30 days in jail
2nd Offense CDV is a Misdemeanor punishable by at least 30 days and no more than one year imprisonment
3rd Offense (or more) CDV is a Felony punishable by at least one year and no more than five years imprisonment.
Criminal Domestic Violence of a High and Aggravated Nature (DVHAN) is a felony punishable by no less than one and no more than ten years imprisonment.
It should be noted that domestic violence offenses are being treated as "day for day" by the South Carolina Department of Corrections after the recent decision of the South Carolina Supreme Court. This means no parole or good time credits for many domestic violence convicts.
